                   MRICHHAKATIKA: ‘‘THE LITTLE CLAY CART’’

 ABOUT WRITER & PUBLICATION:

The writer of Mrichhakatika is sudraka, an ancient Indian playwriter. Very little is known about sudraka, but people describe him as a king and a scholar. As there is little to no information about him legends estimate that he lived between 3rd century BCE to 5th century.

As this play was written a long time ago, there is not much information about publication date, but it is estimated to be written and performed during the “Gupta era.”

The play has been translated to many languages and continues to captivate people and scholars worldwide, this Indian drama stands as a testament to the sophistication of Indian art.

INTRODUCTION:

Mrichhakatika also known as “the little clay cart” is a popular and renowned Sanskrit tale, it holds a significance in classical Indian tales. It is categorised as a “domestic drama” also known as “Prakarana” in Sanskrit, it is a genre which explores mundane life and relationships, the Prakarana has a similarity as “Nataka” described by Rishi Bharat Muni except it requires a somewhat more basic approach. The plot should be taken from original and real life and is mostly based on love. The main character (the hero) is brahmin, merchant, priest and the leader of the army and the female characters were consisting of courtesan or a depraved lady of rich and high-class family, however Sudraka’s tale has a different approach on the story, it does not follow all the rules as per Natya shastra. The male and female lead Bhavabhuti and Malatimadhva character in his play is intriguing and metaphorical.

Sudraka’s writing style consists of realism, complex characters, humorous and witty, use of Sanskrit and prakrit and social critiques. Which makes the storyline more realistic and character depths making Mricchakatika unique among classical Indian literature.

The plot takes a darker turn when shakara attempts to kill vasantasena and frame Charudatta for her murder.
